Dallas Expressed

I So Love Dallas

Where are the hot spots in Austin, TX? And what Hotel should I book?

September 1st, 2010

I live in Dallas but I’ve never been to Austin! I’m going for spring break and I need to book a relatively cheap hotel that is somewhat near the fun spots (mainly good drinking, eating, and whatnot)

Spring break is not the best time to come if you want it to be economical, because that’s when SXSW is going on, and most of the decent cheaper hotels are booked way in advance, so bear in mind that you may end up spending more that you wanted to. However, if you don’t mind being a few minutes away (by cab or even bus) you could try any of the hotels near the Ben White (aka Hwy 71) and IH-35 intersection – there’s a Days Inn, a Red Roof, Hampton Inn, and more. Anything from that intersection and along Ben White going west to about Lamar, or going north on 35 to Riverside (a Wyndham is there) – should be more affordable than you’ll find downtown.

During spring break, the whole of downtown and S. Congress is a madhouse, which is why we (locals who aren’t attending the festival) often avoid it like the plague that week. You will see and meet the most incredible folks, but they won’t necessarily be from here – so it won’t give you the truest "Austin experience", but it will certainly make for great people-watching! With so much going on, it’s almost like a street carnival at night, and you can hear great music just walking past different places on and around 6th and 4th streets… you may want to check the SXSW schedule and see if you can hear your favorite bands even from outside their venue. Definitely pop into the Driskill Hotel on 6th, just for the sense of history.

The variety of bars is amazing… everything from Speakeasy (which is supposed to vaguely emulate a secret prohibition-era place) to goofy college frat boy places. It’s totally a matter of taste. While this doesn’t apply as much when SXSW is on, generally speaking 6th street attracts the younger college age crowd, while people in their late 20s and on gravitate more toward the places on 4th. It’s not that 4th is for old people reliving their lost youth – more like, after 26 or so, some of the places on 6th start looking really cheesy. Not all – but you’ll know what I mean when you see some of these bars.

If you head south on Congress (which intersects both 6th and 4th), you’ll eventually run into the little shopping/restaurant district some call "SoCo", but people who have been here more than 5 minutes generally avoid that term. It’s fun to wander around that way, and you can walk from downtown as it’s technically just down the street, but you may prefer to take a cab. There are a bunch of fun spots, as well as several trailers set up as snack stands in an empty lot.

As for restaurants in the vicinity – we love the Melting Pot for fondue (yes, I know it’s a chain, but it’s still really good!) – no need to order the multicourse expensive thing. Get a cheese and then a chocolate and you’re good for two people – it’s at San Jacinto and 3rd right near the Convention Center. Everyone’s favorite pizza is Homeslice on S. Congress. If you’re into BBQ, Stubbs is a restaurant and a music venue, and will no doubt have a lot of bands playing that week. There’s also a really good Mongolian BBQ very close to the Melting Pot. Decor is a little economical but the food is great and it’s affordable.

If you rent a car at any point, you could go climb the steps up to Mt. Bonnell, which has an incredible view; drive out to the Oasis restaurant on the lake, where everyone claps when the sun sets (old tradition), head up north to the Domain (which is kind of like a mini-village with super fancy shops and restaurants), and of course go play frisbee, fly a kite or rent a canoe at Zilker Park. There are also some good spots along Barton Springs Road for lunch, most notably Chuy’s and Shady Grove.

Have a great time!

How is the amtrax service between Austin and Dallas?

September 1st, 2010

I need to keep travelling between austin and Dallas everyweek – usually monday to thursday.

Appreciate any feedback on this:
How is the Amtrak service between Austin & Dallas ?
Is it safe, how are the fellow passengers ?
Do you get to buy and eat any snacks/drinks ?
How comfortable are the seats for the long journey ?
Are there any power points where i can plug my laptop ?

I have rode the Amtrak train from Dallas to Austin and I really enjoyed it. But it took about 8 hours so it’s rather time-consuming. I don’t know about riding it almost everyday, though, like you are describing. I think that would get pretty expensive. Yes, I think it’s very safe. It wasn’t very crowded at all and I enjoyed meeting the other passengers or I could just keep quiet and to myself if I wanted to. You can get up and walk around from car to car and there is a snack car where you can buy snacks and beverages. It is comfortable and the restrooms on board are very clean and decent. I didn’t have a laptop at the time, but I bet they do have power points. Not sure about that. All in all, I thought it was a great way to travel. Very relaxing with good scenery.

Internets Celebrities at Sundance 2007 – Episode 5

September 1st, 2010

2 Internets Celebrities at Sundance 2007 Episode 5It’s Hammer Time! Even though Sundance ended on Saturday, there are still two more days of Dallas and Rafi’s Main Street debauchery. And who better to kick off the next week of virtual Sundance than our man Mr. MC Hammer? Surprisingly passionate and knowledgeable about the wide world of web video, Hammer knows what Sundance is really about: the Movies.

After hitting the streets and some celebrity hot spots, our Internets Celebrities realize that real filmmakers hang out on the bus and over at Sundance’s sister festival, Slamdance. Taking a step back to meet with film creators (like Arrested Development and You, Me and Dupree director Anthony Russo), some mainstream celebs, and couple of powerful film distributors, Dallas and Rafi find that everyone comes to Sundance to celebrate creation and distribution of their own work.

is dallas texas a great city to tour? im going for a festival ? how is it?hip hop bars/ clubs?scenary?

August 30th, 2010

tell me where to go in Dallas? hot spots i cant miss i will be there july 2nd -8th

Uptown has a huge variety of bars and clubs that would suit almost any taste. Uptown is located around McKinney, Henderson, and Lemmon. Places to try: Fireside Pies (pizza), Cuba Libre, Vickery Park, Corner Bar, The Republic, Lift, Primo’s, Manny’s, Idle Rich Pub, Black Friar, Tribeca (dancing) and Lotus (dancing).

Downtown has some more trendy bars like Purgatory (SE downtown) and the Ghost Bar (located at the W Hotel).

Make sure to check out the Greenville area if you like more of an Austin feel. Lots of places to eat and shop.

There are also a ton of local art and antique shops on Greenville and Henderson.

You don’t want to miss out on:
Dallas Aquarium
Dallas Museum of Art
NorthPark Mall
Reunion Tower
Events at the American Airlines Center
Dallas Arboretum

Six Flags over Texas and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor are in Arlington, which is only about a half hour if you wanted to go out that way.

I’ve recently moved to Dallas from Arlington and I love it! I’ve been here for about 9 months and I’ve still only scratched the surface of all the things there are to do! I think you’ll have a great time. And since its rich with southern hospitality, you can ask any local person about places to try.

Hope you have a great trip!

What time in the afternoon should I leave Dallas in order to avoid traffic driving into Houston?

August 30th, 2010

Hi everyone. I’ve been living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for four months. However, I’ve never been to Houston.

Next Wednesday I’ll need to drive down to Downtown Houston via I-45. But I can’t start heading down there until after lunch.

So what time in the afternoon should I leave Dallas in order to avoid hitting traffic on my way to Houston?

What advice would you give me for my first drive down to Houston?

Thanks!

The worst hours are 5:30 to 6:00 — avoid being on the freeway during that time, and you’ll be OK. If you come this week, don’t worry about it. It’s the last week before school starts, and traffic is very nice when school’s out.

Also, where are you driving? On 45 you’ll be going opposite traffic, and that’s a pretty good direction to come from in general. It may be a non-issue.

Anyone familiar with Irving,TX in Dallas, and what is it like, where r the hot spots?

August 27th, 2010

Irving is close to Dallas. We are thinking of moving there in January. The cost of living is low and it is close enough to Dallas to enjoy the greatness of a big city and is close to many other suburbs. There are friendly people etc. This is probably not much help, but I thought I throw my 2 cents in!!

Is there anywhere in the Dallas area where they will buy glass to recycle?

August 27th, 2010

I’ve only been able to find cash for cans and I have a lot of bottles that I just throw away at work. Is there any place in Dallas that will give cash for bottles or any other goods besides cans? Thanks.

You’re supposed to just give it to recycle because its the right thing to do. They need the money to stay in business.
